10 Pros and Cons Arguments For Abstinence
Approaches to teenage pregnancy prevention are split between two schools of thought: Abstinence (waiting until marriage to have sex)Sex education (including contraceptive information and HIV prevention) Both sides argue that their approach is effective, especially in light of the continuing decline in teen pregnancy rates and teen birth rates. Whether thats true, one fact is clear: The rates in recent years have hit record lows. So is this due to the push in abstinence-only education programs, or in broader and more comprehensive sex education programs that provide teens with information about contraception and HIV prevention? To consider the role of abstinence or sex education in teenage pregnancy prevention, it helps to consider both sides of the argument. Below are 10 arguments for abstinence as the best form of pregnancy prevention for teens. Ready To Learn. Education Is One Of The Most Important
Ready to Learn Education is one of the most important possessions someone can receive in a lifetime. A good education is the foundation to success. It is important to provide the youth with the essential skills and knowledge that will allow them to succeed throughout lifeââ¬â¢s many challenges. With this foundation of a good education an individual can truly achieve their dreams or goals. It is a teacherââ¬â¢s job to provide this education, by not only teaching their subject, but to develop critical thinking skills and how to apply the knowledge learned into everyday life. The subject is important, but the teacher should strive to get the students to apply the knowledge and make them think outside the box. Doing this allows for a deeperâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Teachers should be active learners. They need to expand their knowledge of the subject and continue to be a student in their content area. This will help the teacher use real life examples and bring the material to life to the students. My experiences with adolescents have been primarily through umpiring baseball games. This was a great experience in teaching young adolescents how to play the game and interacting with them in a fun setting. This was great setting for teaching because they were all active in the event and participating where learning comes easy. I was able to guide them but not interfere in their learning of the game of baseball. Also I interacted with the coaches mentioning points to them that may want to improve on or work on in practice. The umpire is a position of authority and respect and great platform to instruct, but a majority of the time it is the umpires goal to not be seen and stay out of the spotlight. My practicum experience was much different, I interacted the students in more one on one sessions as I answered questions and helped them with the task they were assigned to do. This interaction shows that independently learning is great way to get a deeper under standing and with the guidance of the teacher to reinforce important ideas and answer questions. The practicum experience was a good place to reinforce my thoughts about academics and see them in action. Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality Free Essays
Theories of personalities have been studied for many decades. The biological and humanistic approaches to personality have both become infamous in studying the science behind personality. Abraham Maslow developed the hierarchy of needs because he did not believe that the conditioning theories adequately portrayed the complexity of human behavior. We will write a custom essay sample on Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality or any similar topic only for you Order Now In analyzing both the biological and humanistic theories, one can see where Maslow may have been right in that assumption. The basic perceptions of humanistic and biological theories vary significantly. There are some basic ideas behind humanistic psychology. Humanists focus on the present rather than looking at the past or toward the future. Well individuals should take responsibility for themself; regardless of the actions and every individual possess inherent worth. Even negative actions do not negate the value of the person. The achievement of personal growth and understanding is the goal of life (Friedman Schustack, 2012). On the other hand biological theorists believe that genetics can determine a personââ¬â¢s personality. Some concepts state that even if biology plays no direct role in personality, the way a person looks affects how one sees himself/herself and how others interrelate with him/her. This unintended affect controls how a person develops into adulthood. Biological viewpoints teach that intelligence and genes could define a personââ¬â¢s personality. Temperament and mental disorders are thought to be determined by biology. Humanistic theories seem to be generalized, though biological theories are overcomplicated. Although they are wide-ranging opposites in their concepts, together they contain the essence of personality. Abraham Maslow, a humanistic psychologist believed that the people are not controlled by the mechanical forces which include the reinforcement and stimuli forces of behaviorism or some unconscious instinctual impulse of the psychoanalysis. He placed his main focus on what people can really do as opposed to their limitations. His hierarchy of needs has established a major precedence on which human interactions can follow so as to make sure that they achieve productive as well as agreeable outcome. The main essence is to actually prepare people for common existence with themselves and those who are around. The essence of humanistic psychology is usually similar to cognitive psychology as it does acknowledge behavior more than just a stimulus that is determined and hence recognizes perception as the actual essence of actions and behavior (Valiunas, 2012). His hierarchy of needs does represent how exactly growth ought to influence formation of personality. He developed his personality theory in relation to the needs of people. It shows the main influences of human needs to formation of their unique personalities. Maslow contemplates that each trait of human functioning conveys to a complete individual. Maslow consequently referred to these functions as the hierarchy of needs. In his theory Maslow states that there are five key categories of an individual needs. The initial category is physiological needs such as food, water, air, clothing, shelter, and sleep. Previous to realizing or achieving the needs on this level it becomes unfeasible to even consider the next category (Valiunas, 2012). The following category is related to safety, which basically assimilates the need for feeling safe and secured. The third of category in Maslow hierarchy of needs comprises the sense of belonging, needs, and love. It is rational because once an individual is secured then he/she can demand for sense of belonging and love. The next category has to do with self-esteem; it encompasses the need for education, respect, self-competence, and achievement. This is a very important level of needs to an individualââ¬â¢s personality; this level is where an individual focuses his/her energy to feeling proficient, they learn to respect him/her, and to respect others. According to Maslowââ¬â¢s theory, needs impact individual personality in a way that before they hit the highest point of need in the hierarchy one feels discouraged consequently affecting his/her personality. Individuals in the first category do not believe in themselves and be deficient in motivation in life, and tend to implicate different personality compared to those on the highest category of needs. Those on first category of needs will tend to also lack confidence in whatever they do as opposed to those who have achieved self- actualization (Valiunas, 2012). Biological factors are related to some extent with the Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of personality because biological factors for example brains, heredity and physical characteristics are needed during the growth level. There are two biological factors that influence the formation of personality of an individual, heredity and environment factor. Inheritance of a trait is pertinent to individualââ¬â¢s personality (Friedman Schustack, 2012). Basically, individuals inherit a propensity towards a definite structure and propensity to function in definite ways, thus influencing the individual personality development. On the environmental factor, the contact between the mother and a child for biological fulfillment play an important function in personality growth. Care and love enhance a sense of protection and security. Humanistic theories of personality do represent an affirmative view of human behavior. Personality is usually defined as the organized as well as the dynamic set of various characteristics which are possessed by people and which influences their cognitions, behavior as well as their motivations (Friedman Schustack, 2012). Humanistic psychology does emphasize that people do have a free will and do play active role in the determining of how exactly they tend to behave. Humanistic psychology usually focuses on the subjective experience of individuals as opposed to definitive and forced factors which determine behavior. Maslow does believe that all people who are interested in growing ought to move towards the self-actualization level of happiness and satisfaction. The psychological perspectives on expansion of personality do remain influential which comprises of humanistic perspective, isodynamic and existential perspectives, and cognitive, sociocultural and behavioral perspective (Valiunas, 2012). There are many factors that determine our personality. Some of these factors are either humanistic or biological. Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs and humanistic personalityââ¬â¢s theory play a major role in the formation of oneââ¬â¢s personality and so are the biological factors. Though humanistic and biological theories are opposites, they do comprise of the main essence of personality and the blend between these two theories creates effective results. While humanistic and biological theories have many differences and fewer similarities, both theories try to address the issues of personality and try to give a better understanding of personality traits. How to cite Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality, Papers Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality Free Essays Maslow came up with a theory that motivates people. The hierarchy of needs is what he called it, and he analyzed how the needs influence people in general. The needs are self-actualization motives, esteem needs, belongingness and love needs, safety needs, and physiological needs. We will write a custom essay sample on Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality or any similar topic only for you Order Now Each need serves its own purpose. If the basic need is not satisfied, Maslow theory states the other needs cannot be satisfied. In reality everyone has his or her own personality and needs do differ, depending on the person thatââ¬â¢s involved. The basic need or deficiency needs would be water, food, air, love, shelter, warmth, sex, and sleep. From Maslowââ¬â¢s research the physiological need is 85% fulfilled, and once all of these needs are fulfilled a person can advance to the next level of need, the safety needs. They consist of security, protection, law, order, and stability. In general this one is 75% fulfilled by people. The next level is social needs, and this one is 50% fulfilled, it consists of relationships, affection, family, and work group. The esteem needs is achievement, independence, status, dominance, prestige, managerial responsibility, and 40% is fulfilled. The final need everyone is trying to get to is only 10% fulfilled, the self actualization need. It consists of self fulfillment, seeking personal growth, and peak experiences. These needs are coping behavior (McLeod, 2007). Everyone needs the basic needs to live or survive. The behavioral needs that influence people are the social needs, self esteem, and self actualization. People are influenced by social needs when they start getting involved with different personalities and wanting something him or her cannot have or their not able to get. Self esteem can be influenced if the person has a high or low esteem problem. Having a low esteem problem may be influenced by the wrong personality because they may not have confidence in him or herself to be an individual. If the person has a high esteem problem he or she may believe he or she do not need any advice or guidance from another person. The self actualization is the biggest influence, because everyone does not fulfill this need; most people are trying their hardest to fill this need. As noted by, (McLeod, 2007) ââ¬Å"Furthermore, it is extremely difficult to empirically test Maslowââ¬â¢s concept of self-actualization in a way that casual relationships can be established. â⬠() The humanistic theory is different from the biological part of personality behavior, based on the needs of the person. The Humanistic is considered the process of feeling and Biological is the process of thought. For instance, if someone wants to go get and ice cream at night, and it is a nice warm evening, they are going to drive the car to make sure he or she get to the place safely. He or She will make sure the need to be safe is fulfilled. Using their humanistic behavior is taking a walk and enjoy the summer evening weather. So this would be their basic humanistic feelings and not the thought of what could happen if something went wrong. As noted by, (Sammons) ââ¬Å"Whilst it is flattering to view ourselves as basically good entitles striving to fulfill our potential, the humanistic approach is at a loss to explain the horrors that people are capable of inflicting on each other.â⬠() People use common sense when it concerning Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs. They analyze their thoughts on what is a priority or need for them. They try to fulfill the survival needs first, and it goes up the ladder to the self actualization most people never reach this need. When people are using humanistic behavior their feelings are involved, and they are under the impression that most people are of a good nature, and this is not always true. Smarter people will deal more with their biological needs and analyze more of their humanistic behavior before acting on it. How to cite Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality, Papers Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality Free Essays Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality PSY250 As research into personality progressed, scientists began to look beyond psychoanalysis and trait theories for other explanations into how personality develops. They started to look at the biological factors that influence personality formation (Hans Eysenck, Jeffrey Gray, Sir Francis Galton (genetic study of twins)), the effect of growth needs on personality formation (Abraham Maslow), and the basic aspects of the humanistic personality theory and how it compares to the biological explanation of personality formation (Eric Fromm, Carl Rogers, Abraham Maslow). These topics will be considered in more detail in the following discussion. We will write a custom essay sample on Biological and Humanistic Approaches to Personality or any similar topic only for you Order Now Although environment plays a part in personality, genes also make significant contributions. Some genetic disorders, such as Angelman or Williams syndrome are characterized by excessive happiness and friendliness. Biological aspects of a personââ¬â¢s temperament, such as introversion/extroversion, actively, and impulsively, also help shape the personality. Studies of identical twins have shown that twins separated at birth and raised in different environments still share many personality traits. Therefore, we are not simply blank slates totally influenced by what our environment writes on us. Responses to certain environmental stimuli seem to be hard-wired into our nervous system and endocrine systems. Electroencephalograms (EEG) have shown that, at a very basic level, extroverts show less arousal to stimulation then introverts do. Hans Eysenck theorized that because of this low level of arousal, extroverts seek out stimulating circumstances while introverts, who may be receiving too much stimulation from the environment, try to ââ¬Å"get away from it allâ⬠by shying away from stimulating environments. Differences in activation of the brainââ¬â¢s hemispheres may also effect personality formation. Greater activation of the right hemisphere, which is believed to have a role in negative emotions, may cause over reaction to negative stimuli. On the other hand, higher activation of the left hemisphere, thought to play a role in positive emotions, could result in more powerful reactions to positive stimuli. Jeffrey Gray proposed the idea that our nervous systems may be responsible for influencing whether we are more motivated by punishment or reward. Disruption in the function of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin can also effect personality. Will Sheldon expanded on Ernest Kretschmerââ¬â¢s ideas that body type might be connected to certain mental disorders and applied them to the general population. Sheldon developed three body types and associated personality characteristics: mesomorphs ââ¬â muscular, large-boned; athletic, ectomorphs ââ¬â slender; studious, and endomorphs ââ¬â roly-poly; good-natured. Sheldonââ¬â¢s ideas were too simplistic, but it might be possible that certain biological factors could affect both personality and body type. Social influences may affect body type, which may in turn affect how others react. Both aspects can influence personality development. ââ¬Å"A stable personality depends on a healthy, well-functional brainâ⬠( was this supposed to be cited) Certain diseases and disorders can change can change or destroy oneââ¬â¢s personality. Strokes damage part of the brain and can cause a dramatic change in personality. Pickââ¬â¢s disease also causes deterioration of the brain. It may cause a marked change in in a personââ¬â¢s beliefs or preferences. Alzheimerââ¬â¢s disease, as the disease becomes advanced, seems to result in total loss of personality. Postpartum depression is triggered by a biological process. Severe, untreated symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, and persistent disturbing thoughts of suicide, being possessed, or harming the infant. Environmental toxins, such as mercury, and both legal and illegal drugs, including Valium, Prozac, cocaine, and herion, can result in biological changes to the body that may temporarily or permanently alter personality. Globalization of Academic Innovation
Question: Discuss about the Globalization of Academic Innovation. Answer: Introduction The phenomenon of globalization has a long history, which has led to increased economic integration among the countries. Fact that the globalization has transformed the world cannot be denied as it has brought many good things to the developing countries. It has continuously led to the deindustrialization of America. Every major section of world economy is dominated by the globalization. This neoliberal globalization has accelerated the global mega trend of political instability, rising inequality and absolute poverty, which are adversely affecting the lives and threatening the futures of the nation of the world. The aim of the developing a developed nations is to have equitable, domestic, sustainable and free societies in this regard, it is viable to question the benefits of various dimensions of globalization. There are certain issues associated with the dimensions of globalization. One of the major economical challenges faced in globalization is consistent high unemployment that is reinforced due to increased population growth rate and labor force. One of the major challenge posed by increased reach of global markets. This increase in inequality majorly happens in China and India. This increase in inequality in and across countries encourages the emigration process of highly skilled citizens. It had been criticized that globalization is dis-equalizing in most of the domains. Critical Analysis on Globalization Unequal Globalization- One of the major challenge posed by increased reach of global markets. There are several reasons considering tremendous economic gains in association with deeper as well as efficient global markets (Spring 2014). Most of the integrated trade markets, global technology and capital flows give rise to increase the demand for skills in a rapid global environment. This increase in inequality majorly happens in China and India. This increase in inequality in and across countries encourages the emigration process of highly skilled citizens. It had been criticized that globalization is dis-equalizing in most of the domains. One of the classic examples is market failure. In the global markets, it tends for dis-equalizing aspects such as global security as well as shared prosperity and global social justice (Sassen 2015). Large debt burden of developing countries- It had been witnessed that there was remarkable shift present in changing economic trends for the past few years (Pieterse 2015). There occur issues like current account imbalances, volatile capital flows as well as misaligned exchange rates and finacialization. This affected the commodity markets and faced severe crisis in the developing countries (Altbach 2015). Debate continues by properly discussing relevant monetary, income policies as well as fiscal policies for addressing the continuing fallout from severe crisis. Therefore, International community is falling short due to delivering solutions especially for minimizing the long-standing challenges of aspects such as poverty, climate change as well as food security and debt burden (McGrew and Lewis 2013). Protectionism despite WTO- Evidence showed that there was hidden protectionism that was hard to monitor and count at the same time. After the global financial crisis, there had been cited instances of Governments where measures had been undertaken by playing in favor of domestic commercial interests (Kaplinsky 2013). This protectionism takes into consideration WTO global architecture of trade rules as well as spread of regional trade agreements. In contrast, McGrew and Lewis (2013) stated that in the current years WTO and several others have started warning regarding protectionism. WTO reports are deemed trade-based developments that cover overall WTO membership along with observers. Large-scale environmental degradation- It is argued that trade reduces pollution because of greater competitive pressure or greater access for greener production technologies. In this globalization era, developing countries enhances their interdependence with the help of international trade (Crane, Kawashima and Kawasaki 2016). Widening gap between rich and poor- Globalization widens the wealth gap with advanced economies outpacing the developing countries. In other words, Globalization has increased prosperity in and across the world whereby people in advanced global economies benefits disproportionately in the recent developing world (Breznitz and Etzkowitz 2016). Globalization has narrowed down poverty between rich as well as poor from one country to other. For instance, GDP per capital in China and India whereby economic reforms enters in the global economy considering WTO membership for improving the average income of population Socio-Cultural Homogenization Cultural Homogenization is an important aspect of cultural globalization and it is considered as one of the main features that lead to decrease in cultural diversity. It takes place through diffusion and popularization of broad display of symbols of culture. This occurs among physical objects as well as among values, ideas and customs. According to Altbach (2015), the process by which the local cultures are absorbed or transformed by an outside culture (dominant) is termed as Cultural Homogenization. It has been found that this cultural homogenization has supported and played a great role in globalization. For example, people of any country can enjoy the identical taste of coffee of Starbucks by sitting in their homes. It has been found that within less than half a century, Starbucks coffee chain has expanded from one outlet in Seattle to about 20,000 shops across the world in 60 countries. Less Diversity According to Kaplinsky (2013), the discourse about the impacts of globalization on cultural diversity is considered as a challenging debate. However, Breznitz and Etzkowitz (2016) argued that the advancement and the modernization of the technology has dissolved the boundaries among various international countries and has opened the culture to a new arena. Therefore, it can be said that less diversity enables in occurring globalization successfully. For example, the most common language is English that is used all over the world and therefore, it can be said that globalization has resulted into decrease in diversity. However, it has been found that globalization has also some negative effects on the factor of diversity. These include the globalization disempowered the people through misrepresentation, colonization takes place so loss of individualism takes place. Moreover, it can be said that globalization can lead to loss of identity. Struggle over Scarce Resource As per Pieterse (2015), the globalization leads to increase in demand for the resources. Therefore, it resulted into scarcity in the resources as the globalized business means huge customer base and therefore, in order to fulfill the demand of the clients, more production is also required. Thus, it can be said that due to globalization, some of the entrepreneurs have to struggle for getting resources for the manufacturing or production of the goods. For example, scarcity in the natural resources hampers many businesses. Wars Opined to Spring (2014), the globalization always does not result into peace, rather it originates war among the entrepreneurs as well as among the countries. The reason behind this is that the globalization of a particular business hampers the local business in the same field by occupying the local market by international products. For example, the products of China have occupied the markets of other countries. Technology Dimension According to Majeed (2015), the world has become economically and culturally alike because of globalization. Presently, globalization is regarding the shrinking of the world due to the revolutionary changes within the technologies of transportation and communication. It produces the newer and uneven development. Ethical Dimension It has been found that globalization has resulted into respect for the global worker rights. Therefore, the satisfied workers perform ethically and provide better performance in their work. Economical- Economic challenges faced because of the effect of globalization in Arab includes short term political wrangling that can be observed from several economic excursions of youth within the Middle East. Moreover, inequality can affect social cohesion that results in issues such as high violence. Political- Globalization is observed to bring out problems such as global conflict, environmental issues, terrorism and insufficient political institutions for dealing with them. Political issues takes place for the reason that globalization impacts employment and economic status of people. Impact of Globalization on Arab Countries It has been found that oil is considered as a resource on which the economy of UAE depends and due to globalization, the market of oil has expanded largely and thus the economy of the country is enriched. Therefore, globalization leads to creation of new job opportunities in UAE. Globalization influences on the reality of Arab and this impose the conditions on the nation of Arab by not there apparition. However, according to the concept of colonialism, without providing Arab interests any effect, as it did not raise a prototype of commerce with them, if that model negatively or positively, and alternative to the probabilities or revolutionary slogans might lack impartiality. Conclusion At the end of the study, it is concluded that Globalization resulted considering best interest of both developed as well as developing countries. The above report discuss the issues concerning with dimensions of Globalization. The assignment brings into account the potential causes whereby globalization is lacking in serving the developing countries to achieve future prosperous life in terms of poverty, unemployment and other issues. Therefore, it can be said that the dimensions of globalization have both positive and negative effect on the international market. Reference List Altbach, P., 2015. Discuss the Importance of Visual Perception Essay Example
Discuss the Importance of Visual Perception Essay Simply because something seems or is supposed to be a certain way due to ones societal expectations, does not mean that it always will be. Things are not always the way they appear and it takes much greater knowledge and understanding to accept people for what they are, even if it does not go along with what one learned. Keywords: Gender, male and female, hormones, environment Sexual Development Everyone possesses a gender identity, which most often matches ones anatomic appearance. Ones sexual development can be either male or female or even something In between. Is sexual development truly so Important or does It not play that significant of a role? Maybe this example will help everyone come too better conclusion about this subject. A healthy baby boy was born to very happy parents. However, about eight months into his life, something happened and his genitals were horrifically destroyed. His biggest male appearance at that age, his penis, did not exist anymore. His parents, completely disturbed by the accident, heard about a psychologist who was able to assign sex to children whose genitals were destroyed or not there for another reason. According to Culbertson (2009), If it is not created, then the child will be assigned a grammatical gender (in the Western world, all hillier must be either a boy or a girl), which may or may not match that childs social gender as It evolves over the course of childhood (Para. 14). Very often, when a parent chooses the sex for his or her own child due to the circumstances, It seems to work very well. However, prenatal hormones also Influence these factors In either working or not. Nevertheless, it did not work in this case and this boy began to live an unhappy life as a girl. Her parents finally told her what happened and she began the transformation into a male. It seems like being a male made him happier once again and he even married and became a stepfather. However, this story does not have a successful conclusion, as David Reamer committed suicide at the age of 38 (New York Times, 2004). This tragic story shows that ones sexual development matters. It also explains that there is more than one factor that contributes to ones sexual development. Therefore, the author of this paper will try to provide a better understanding Into how gender identity and sexual development happens. The interaction between hormones and behavior will be explained and what role It plays In finding his or her own gender Intently In sexual development. As usual, It will also use the help of physiology and the environment to provide a better answer Tort ten reader. I nee autumn nope Tanat ten reader wall not only straddles a deeper knowledge about this subject but mostly that he or she will walk away with more understanding for individualism. Determination of Sexual Development Many different factors come into play determining ones final sexual development. It is very important to acknowledge that not everything that appears a certain way also will perform as such. Ones anatomy might indicate being a male or female; however, this does not mean that this is actually how a person views him or herself. Chromosomes play a very important role in developing sexual organs. Sexual chromosomes, such as XX and XX, help determine sexual differentiation. For instance, XX chromosomes will lead to the development of a female while XX chromosomes develop a male. In addition, the sexual X chromosome and non-sexual chromosomes can do more and possess the ability of developing either sexual genitals. This is why the exposure to hormones before and after one is born is so significant. Hormones are responsible for ones biological development. Therefore, it is very interesting to find out that the Y chromosome directs the glands to releases male sex hormones. Furthermore, hormones present during pregnancy will most likely affect the nervous system. It is important to acknowledge that every embryo is bisexual and has the ability to develop into a male or female until the end of the first trimester and the ability of hormones, which will the determine the kind of system, the Mlearn system or Wolfram system, one develops (Carlson, 2007). It is clear that hormones influence sexual development and help one to not only view him or her as male or female but also feel as such. For instance, hormones also influence feminine and masculine characteristics. As stated by Beer (2004), Masculine and androgynous children and adults have higher self-esteem, whereas feminine individuals often think poorly of themselves, perhaps because many of their traits are not highly valued by society'(p. 263). Children and Sexual Development One is not born knowing everything about him or herself. The way one is brought p, the environment, and different beliefs, Just to mention few, all help one come to that conclusion. Children are not born with the knowledge of what his or her anatomy and gender identity is; they learn it at a certain age. To be even more exact and according to Rather, Envied, Fischer-Rather (2008) Most children first become aware of their anatomic sex by about the age of 18 months. By 36 months, most children have acquired a firm sense of gender identity (p. 167). Therefore, ones social learning and cognitive development also affect gender identity and sexual development. Children are influenced first by their parents and then by other authorities, peers and even the media. Another very important theory that should be considered in how one comes to their gender identity is the gender schema theory. This theory knows the strong influence ones cognitive development and the environment play together. This happens by setting either masculine or feminine categories with which one can identify more. So for instance, boys play only with specific toys and girls do the same. Either gender is criticized by not following these rules or these rules are even pre-set by others. Parents buy gender specific toys and stores even categorize their sections by age and gender. These examples show how much other factors help one choose his and her gender identity and therefore influence ones sexual development (Beer, 2004, p. 63). Still, even though ones appearance normally goes along Walt ones preference, tenure are times when tins does not happen. Maybe this is one of the reasons why it takes so many to open up and let everyone know how he or she truly feels. This may also be one of the reasons why so many never say anything and hurt themselves or even end their lives. This is why it is especially important for parents and other authorities roles to avoid stereotyping and allow the possibility of acceptance even if it does not go alone with ones thinking and the social agreement. Furthermore, this can be explained by examining the behavior of intellectuals. Intellectuals gonads differ from their sexual appearance yet they are brought up by how they look. However, many express difficulty indemnifying with being either male or female. This provides the clear evidence of the interplay of biological factors and the environment contributing to ones sexual development (Rather, Envied, Fischer-Rather, 2008). However, indemnifying with either one seems to be important. Quoted by Gross: Both males and females reported that gendered expectations at home involved educational success. For females, gendered expectations at school involved being interested in fashion and boys. For males, gendered expectations at school involved being interested in girls and participating in non-academic activities like sport (Gross, 2009). Biological Psychology Biological psychology plays an important role and considers different factors when explaining what and how sexual differentiation and sexual development is determine. It acknowledges that a persons brain influences ones behavior; this behavior resembles male or female characteristics and will be categorized as such. However, biological psychology also knows that it is not so simple explaining a human and there are many other important aspects in ones life, which cause certain things to occur. Therefore, not only the brain but also, hormones, heredity, the environment, cultural upbringing, and ones choices will determine either a rotational or a non-traditional role with which one can better identify. Determination of Greater Influence As everyone differs from each other, so too differ each individuals influence. For instance, someone could have been exposed to prenatal hormones that normally would determine how one turns out to be, but then they were prone to the influences of his or her environment and turned out completely opposite. Therefore, saying which has the greater contribution is a difficult decision to make. There is evidence for both such as, being raised as a male and resembling one should surely let one now that is how they should feel. That does not happen all the time. If the answer would be so clear, then one should be able to know what causes female homosexuals to have higher levels of testosterone, as human biology or a certain lifestyle can increase the level. This is why it is, most likely, the interplay of both that contribute to this occurrence, leading to uncertainty of the main cause. Conclusion Ones looks do not indicate how one feels and certain important factors contribute to ones sexual differentiation, gender identity, and sexual development. Surely, it taters to try to find the correct answers because they may provide more understanding to human nature. So maybe one day, much clearer resolutions can be provided. However, in the mean time, one should always keep in mind that every Uninominal trees to De Nils or near Test Ana to De acknowledge Is want, In ten end, counts and makes a truly good person. One way of doing so is by making it illegal to discriminate in employment, public accommodation, credit, housing and education based on a persons sexual orientation or gender identity'( Journal of Property Management, 2007).

Walmarts Success
Walmarts Success There are several critical factors that have lead to Wal-Mart's impressive success through the years. To unveil (at least partly) the secret of its success, we must examine Wal-Mart's cost advantage relative to a more typical discount retailer. To do this we will study table A derived blow.Exhibit A: Wal-Mart vs. Industry Economics of Discounting Comparison in 1984 (% of net sales)Line ItemsWAL-MARTIndustry AverageNet Sales100%100%License fees and Other income.811.1Cost of Goods Sold73.8071.9Payroll Expense10.1011.2Advertising Expense.352.3Rental Expense1.902.2Miscellaneous Expense6.237.6Operating Income8.505.9Net income4.202.7Firstly, as indicated in Exhibit A, the licensing fees and other income is slightly lower than that of the industry average. This is primarily due to the fact that Wal-Mart increasingly ran over two-thirds of their specialty (shoes, pharmaceuticals, and jewelry) departments themselves. As indicated in the case, this figure continued to drop in subsequent years. Secondarily, in examining the cost of goods sold (COGS) for Wal-Mart we see that, quite unexpectedly, their COGS is actually higher by nearly 2% than that of the industry average.walmart beijingThis seemingly large difference can be explained by Wal-Mart's overall strategy of volume pricing vs. margin pricing.Third, we see that the payroll expense incurred by Wal-Mart is nearly 1% point less than that of the industry average. This can be explained by the fact that Wal-Mart enjoys high labor productivity that is a result of technical investment made at each store location. Wal-Mart's high revenue also reduces payroll expense as a percentage of revenue.Additionally, advertising expense is considerably lower than that of the industry average. We know that in 1979 $3.7 million were spent on television advertising and this figure represented 29% of Wal-Mart's total advertising expense. From this we can calculate that the total actual advertising expense for 1979 was...

Changes in American Transportation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Changes in American Transportation - Essay Example Transportation includes transportation of people, goods, and even animals. There were various means of transportation in America during the 1800's, including Steam Boats, Horses and the use of Public Ferry. Nowadays, transportation and communication are usually treated in different contexts. However, during early 1800's, long distance communication was very much dependent upon transportation. During that period, transportation was synonymous to communication, and the growth of transportation directly affected the developments in communication to a great extent. During the 1800's the 'pony couriers', a means of transportation as well as communication, influenced the history of transportation in America. In order to appreciate the changes in transportation during that period, it is necessary to analyze the process under the then prevailing circumstances, and gain an understanding of transportation methods and processes back then. A careful analysis of the newspapers of this period in the history provides glimpses of the status of transportations prevailed in those times. In America, transportation in the sea and waterways was already quite developed between 1800 and 1810. The use of steam boats started between 1800 and 1810. ... Transportation of the agricultural and industrial commodities strengthened the economy of the country. Within few years steam boar services grown very fast, catering to the development of the economy, and a news article is given below. Natchiz, Jan 2: Important Arrival - Arrived here on Monday last, the Steam-Boat from Pittsburgh which had as a regular trader She was only 921 hours underway from Pittsburgh to this place a distance of near two thousand miles."1 Before then, only the inland methods of transportation, like horses, mules and asses which remained primitive because of their slow pace of technological development, that Americans relied upon. Animals like horses, mules and asses were the means of transportation before 1800.This change in the mode of transportation enabled Americans to move from place to place more conveniently than they could before 1800. During the 1800's it was normal to come across the advertisements in newspapers, a sample of which is given below, for trading in horses. "A Mare and Horse for Sale, Classified Ad 4"2 Another change in the mode of transportation between 1800 and 1810 was the commencement of the use of Public ferries. Adverts like the one below were to be regularly seen in the newspapers then. Differences between Race & Gender - Essay Example This paper highlights that Stanton et al describe the way men have mistreated women in the society for so long. Man is said to have never allowed a woman to exercise her rights, deprived her voice before the law, and the woman has been denied right to own property. Stanton et al however condemn these cores of actions and suggests that only God has the sole responsibility of defining the roles and abilities of men and women in the society. ââ¬Å"We insist that they have immediate admission to all the rights and privileges which belong to them as citizens of United Statesâ⬠. This paper declares that Dub Bois talks of seclusion by the society which makes you odd and feel discriminated, he talks of the problem of the twentieth century as the color line. It once dawned on him that he was different from others when a young lady refused to pick a card from him while seated amongst other people. This matter was the first hand experience of Dubois on brutality of discrimination. Meanwhile the women in America underwent lives of suffering struggling with a lot of burdens on their shoulders; ââ¬Å"in all the roles was to seek fulfillment as wives and mothersâ⬠.Ã

Life And Battles Of Saigo Takamori History Essay
Life And Battles Of Saigo Takamori History Essay The Last Samurai: The Life and Battles of Saigo Takamori, written by Mark Ravina, chronicles Saigos life, from childhood that fashioned his courage to his own death at the Satsuma Rebellion. In pre-industrial Japan, samurai meant military nobility. This book is a biography of Saigo that explains many of the events leading up to the Restoration and the role the battle of Satsuma played in the Restoration. Saigo Takamori is revered as one of Japans most loyal and honorable samurai. Part of the legend for Saigo was the fate of his severed head. The other part of the legend is was he killed or did he commit suicide as an act of heroism. It is unclear what year Saigo was born. Some references have 1827, while others have 1828. Regardless of the year, Saigo was born into a samurai family that was very low ranked in Kagoshima. He was born into wealth or rank. He was educated at a local level. His became very educated in Chinese classics and Zen, as well as swordsmanship. His first job was as an assistant clerk in a country office. In 1854, at the age of 26, he was selected to journey the Daimyo Shimazu Nariakira to promote closer ties with the imperial court. This journey is where his political career began. Saigo went on many journeys with statesmen. In 1858, he was a part of the Ansei purge and fled with a priest. The preist and Saigo made a suicide pact. Saigo backed out of the pact, only after the priest had already committed to his end of the deal by drowning himself. Saigo survived the journey but was later exiled to Amami Oshima Islands. In 1862, he returned to political life, but was forced into exile once again. He was brought out of exile in 1864. He was called back to the main island to train a group of Satsuma warriors. Saigo was to help his lord fight for the restoration of the emperor. Saigo became one of the main leaders of the new Japan. In 1868, Saigo and his troops led a revolt to destroy and create a powerful new state. He became the leader in Meijis new government. Saigo was now an active member of the Meiji government. Although Saigo supported many of the Western-style reforms, he was torn by the sense that he was betraying his supporters. It was a desire for Saigo to die in service to his emperor. Saigo showe d great loyalty to the emperor and his followers. Unsure about the government he had helped to create, Saigo wanted to end his career with one last movement. In 1873, Saigo wanted to go to Korea and demand the Korean king recognize the Meiji emperor. He had every intention to draw his sword if he had to. Saigo never was able to move forward with his plan to have the Japanese emperor recognized. His plan was dismissed and treated as reckless. He was denied his chance to show his loyalty and courage to the emperor. He resigned from the government and returned to Satsuma, his native land Satsuma. Saigo opened up military like academy for the former samurai warriors. He trained the men in frugality, honesty, and courage. This group resented the modernization of Japan more so than Saigo. Saigo feared the impersonal, commercial and centralized nation would destroy samurai traditions of personal honor, regional loyalty, and social service. Japan in the 1870s was going through many changes of industrialization and social and political changes. This process is also known as modernization. Many people had negative views on Japan and its culture. In 1876, westerners considered the Japanese to be uncivilized people. They thought that Japan was inferior to Caucasians in culture, intelligence, and culture. Japan even paid some Westerners very well to sit on government seats. Often this visits were short lived. The views that outsiders had on Imperial Japan are one reason that Japan sought to do away traditions of the samurai. Every aspect of traditional Japan and been thrown to the side. Japan had begun to westernize itself; not to be confused with Americanize. Saigo felt as if the traditions of the past would die out. The very hurried and colossal changes to Japanese culture, dress, and society appeared to many samurai to be a treachery. In 1876, the Meiji government stripped samurais of their swords. In defining how a moder n Japan should be, members of the Meiji government decided to follow the footsteps of United Kingdom and Germany, basing the country on the concept of noblesse oblige. Samurai were not to be a political force under the new order. Saigos followers and students rose in rebellion. They had a mission to let their voice be heard with their swords. The students made Saigo their leader of this uprising. Old Japan and new Japan met in battle in 1877. Early in the uprising, the rebels seized several local armories. Many of the rebels officers were trained in modern methods. The fight initially lasted from February to September. The imperial army began its final attack around four in the morning in September. By 5:30 A.M., the imperial army had destroyed all the fortifications of the rebels. At roughly seven in the morning, Saigo and his troops descended from the hill to face the Japanese army. They knew they were outnumbered. They knew they would die. Saigo died from a bullet wound, but legend has it that he died by his own sword. This was a great samurai tradition to die with honor at the end of ones life. This tradition is known as seppuku, a samurai suicide ritual. An autopsy of Saigo later revealed that he was onl y shot in the hip and would have been in too much pain to commit suicide. The imperial governments victory was short lived. They had Saigos body, but his head was missing. His head was but off with one clean slice. If the government was unable to provide a head, then the victory is incomplete. In looking for Saigos head, the imperial army was honoring one of the oldest traditions. It is said that severed heads were to be presented and were a celebrated part of Japanese warfare. These heads were often a tribute to the lords. No one is sure exactly what happened to Saigos head immediately following his death. Some say Saigos manservant hid the head. The head was later placed with Saigos body after a government official found it. One ironic part of searching for Saigos head is that the imperial army was honoring a tradition that was officially banished by the emperor. The new Japanese army was to be based on modern nationalism, not feudal loyalty. So in a sense, the death of Saigo brought forth some old traditions that had been banished in early years. It is said that this rebellion, the War of the Southwest, was the bloodiest battle that Japan had ever seen. Saigos forces were defeated. Old Japan was defeated. Over 12,000 men on both sides were killed. This battle also nearly bankrupted the new imperial government. Financially, devastating the Satsuma Rebellion cost the government significantly, forcing Japan off the gold standard and triggering the government to print paper currency. The imperial army had to use every resource available, including shipping lines, rail transport, police forces, and volunteers. The Imperial Japanese Armies were drafted, but many samurai volunteered to be soldiers and many advanced to be trained as officers. Much of the Imperial Army officer class was of samurai origin and they were highly motivated, disciplined and exceptionally trained. The rebellion was also successfully the close of the samurai class. After this war in 1877, there were no more samurai uprisings in Japan. Twelve years after Saigos death, the imperial government, denounced Saigo as a rebel and a traitor. In 1889, the government exonerated Saigo of all his crimes, and restored him to his imperial court rank. Saigo is still a legacy today in popular culture. A modern movie that is loosely based on the history of Saigo was produced. Many people still find his actions heroic none the less. Saigo was a samurai warrior who lived and died to protect the traditions he was so fond of preserving. In life and death, Saigo exemplified all that was labeled as being admirable in the samurai. This book written by Mark Ravina gives one last look at the final days of feudal government and the exciting career of Saigo. He gave his life to keep the samurai traditions at the forefront of the Japanese government. His efforts and loyalty have had a lasting impact on Japan and the interpretations of the samurai way and tradition.

John Keats Fear That He Might Cease to Be Essay -- John Keats, poetry
During his last years, Keats ponders about what it would mean to die. He translates this into fears of what he hasnââ¬â¢t yet accomplished and would like to have time to do. This aspect of time is emphasised with the use of the word ââ¬Å"whenâ⬠at the start of the first three quatrains which is also used in Shakespearean Sonnets. The heading, ââ¬Å"When I have fears that I may cease to beâ⬠demonstrates Keatsââ¬â¢ belief, or rather, lack of belief in the idea of an afterlife. In the first quatrain of the poem Keats describes his fertile imagination, yearning to have ââ¬Å"gleanââ¬â¢d my teeming brainâ⬠before it is too late, the image of abundance is instilled with the words ââ¬Å"high- piledâ⬠and ââ¬Å"rich.â⬠The paradox of a field of grain is used to depict Keatsââ¬â¢ brain being ââ¬Ëharvestedââ¬â¢ of the knowledge into poems of his own creation. In this stanza, Keats reveals his want for fame through his works and his fears of be ing unable to fulfil this in his time. In the second stanza Keats demonstrates his use of nature in poetry. He describes the ââ¬Å"nightââ¬â¢s starrââ¬â¢d faceâ⬠which could refer to Keats contemplating the beauty...

Kite Festival
Rino Bnao EN 101-4 Karen Millam Sep 14, 2012 Taiwanese Kite Festival Kite Festival is the event where people made different kind of kites to fly them. Few days ago I went to Delap to attend the kite festival. I really enjoyed the event and although there are many reasons why I like about the kite Festival, few major facts why I like the event the most and catches my attention. First reason why I like the event is that the Taiwanese allowed the kids to fly and played their kites. Each kid that I saw during the event was really happy. They enjoyed playing with the different kind of kites. The Taiwanese even gave the kids each a small kite that they can play with it and fly it around and enjoyed the day. Another reason why I like the event is the Kites. There are about ten to fifteen kites that flying in the air. Each kite shape like different kind of animals and that one thing that catches my attention. I even asked myself why is all the kites shape like an animal. Later on after interv iewing or talking with one of the team member, I found out that an animal is the best shape that they used.He said that the every entire kite they fly will always be an animalââ¬â¢s shape. Each kite has different kind of color and they look bright with their color. Finally I like the event because I learn something from it. First thing that I learn is how to make it and what materials that used to make a kite. According to them, Bamboo stick and silk is the best material to make a kite. They show us how they made it and it was really awesome seeing them making a kite for the kids.I also learn that the event is really important because they bring back the Taiwanese or Chinese history and of course bring flying sport to Marshall Island. Also learned what are the kite for and there are many things that they can use for the kite. For example they used the kite for sport and also for war. Small or big kites can be both useful for many reasons. In conclusion, I really admired the color ful kites that surrounded me. I enjoyed the event because I learn good thing about kite and how useful, colorful, awesome they are. This entire thing catches my attention. I was surprise when I saw them.

Space Disasters essays
Space Disasters essays Even with the numerous technological improvements these disasters seem to be inevitable. The cause of the accidents may not be the fault of the technology though. The Columbia crash, for example, should be blamed on the ignorance of the upper-level managers and NASA scientist. They had considered hundreds of problems, literally, that might threaten the crafts safety, but they decided to launch it anyway. There were also many previous damages that the Columbia obtained in its twenty-two years of use, such as snapped pins and broken foam. Individuals within NASA felt that if it caused no problem the first time it must be safe. On January 28, 1986, the space shuttle Challenger exploded seventy-three seconds into its flight, killing the seven members aboard, including a teacher. This accident was believed to be caused by, believe it or not, the temperature that day. Due to the cooler temperatures than experienced on previous launches the O-rings, which seal two field joints together, were changed. Scientist said that the two different O-rings were not significantly different. So if NASA would have been patient and delayed the launch of the Challenger to a warmer day the lives of the astronauts, and one very unlucky teacher would not have been needlessly lost. Besides the two more commonly known accidents of the space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, there have been a number of other accidents around the world that have claimed many lives. On March 18, 1980, a Russian spacecraft exploded on the launch pad while being refueled killing fifty. None of the astronauts were killed only the unexpecting engineers and mechanics. Another accident occurred June 1971. This disaster was very mysterious at the time when three astronauts were found dead in the Soyuz II after an automatic landing. Further investigation suggested that the cause of death was loss of pressurization in the shuttle during re-entry into the Earths atmospher ...

United States Postal Service Essay Example
United States Postal Service Essay Example United States Postal Service Essay United States Postal Service Essay The U. S. Postal Service It is important for the U. S. Postal Service to have a high volume of mail to process in order to follow the mission statement. An organization mission is its reason for existence and is expressed in the mission statement (Stevenson 42). Mission of the Postal Service: The Postal Service shall have as its basic function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through the personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall provide prompt, reliable, and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render postal services to all communities (USPS 1998). For the Postal Service to ââ¬Å"bind the Nation togetherâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ they would need a high volume of mail from across the country to process on a daily basic. The more mail means a more successful business. Productivity improved at the Postal Service due to the increased use of automation and introduction and later expansion of zip codes. The technological advancements allowed for postal rates to remain low and maintain rapid delivery. Technology is not enough for productivity to increase. There needs to be proper planning or else technology can reduce productivity (Stevenson 58). Competition from delivery companies such as, FedEx and UPS put pressure on the United States Postal Service to increase productivity to keep rates low and maintain rapid delivery. Operations Management makes point that pricing is very important to consumers in the selection process and that there is a trade-off between price and quality (Stevenson 40). Having lower prices and/or rapid delivery will determine whether someone will choose to mail their package with the Postal Service or the competition. The United States Postal Service took several steps to remain competitive, first starting with customer service. The Postal Service began working to better identify their customerââ¬â¢s needs; this included adding customer service managers, expanding retail hours, and measuring customer satisfaction. The text explains that ââ¬Å"Identifying consumer wants and/or needs is a basic input in an organizationââ¬â¢s decision making processâ⬠(Stevenson 40). The Postal Service also underwent a reorganization where management positions were eliminated and divisions were consolidated to reduce overhead. These measures all lead to increased production and speedier delivery to remain competitive. The results of the Postal Serviceââ¬â¢s changes were very successful. The reduced bureaucracy and overhead lead to improved service, customer satisfaction and reduced the need to increase postage rates. The reorganization eliminated some programs, cut cost, attracted new business, and reduced the Postal Serviceââ¬â¢s projected deficit. The Postal Service employed a quality-based strategy to accomplish these goals. They focused on improving the quality of its organization, as quality is maintains and attracts new customers (Stevenson 50). The increased use of e-mail has an inverse effect on the Postal Serviceââ¬â¢s production. The more mail that is sent electronically means less mail is being processed by the Postal Service. The less mail being processed equals decreased productivity (Stevenson 53).

AN EXTENSIVE ANALYSIS OF BELOVED, BY TONI MORRISON Essay
AN EXTENSIVE ANALYSIS OF BELOVED, BY TONI MORRISON - Essay Example But before we can relegate the statement to this easy explanation, we must consider the answers to what is ââ¬Ëitââ¬â¢ referring to; an answer that can change depending upon the way in which it is read. By understanding the general plot line of the story and the reasons why Morrison might have built this deliberately ambiguous statement into the novel, it becomes possible to understand how the various approaches might interpret the story differently in such a way that most of them reach the same final conclusion ââ¬â that here is a story that absolutely must be told. The story follows the fictional character Sethe, who lives in a small ââ¬Å"gray and white house on Bluestone Roadâ⬠(Morrison, 1988, p. 1) with her daughter Denver. Throughout the story, we learn these two women have not always lived alone, nor will they remain alone as the story progresses. As the story opens, we learn that Sethe and Denver once lived with Setheââ¬â¢s two sons, Howard and Bugler, who have both run away as a result of strange, ghostly activities happening at the house. They also once lived with Baby Suggs, Setheââ¬â¢s mother-in-law and the woman who taught Sethe how to live again after escaping slavery. Very quickly, we are also introduced to Paul D, who was one of the men Sethe had worked with on Sweet Home, the Kentucky plantation where she, her husband and several others had been cruelly treated as slaves. Upon her escape from slavery, an event that happened many years prior to the opening of the story, Sethe murdered her youngest child, a girl, as p art of a desperate attempt to keep her precious daughter from experiencing the type of degradation and abuse Sethe experienced at the hands of Schoolteacher. It is this child who returns to haunt her mother and family in later years, manifesting itself in the bodily form of Beloved, who feeds off of this desperation to eventually bring about a final resolution. Development of Dubai International Airport (DXBOMDB) (Dubai) Essay
Development of Dubai International Airport (DXBOMDB) (Dubai) - Essay Example d.). In order to ensure continuous growth, continuous development and improvement need to be taken place. Different development projects are carried out on the Airport Development which boosts the growth of the Airport. The Dubai International Airport was constructed under the supervision and order of the then ruler Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum in the year 1959. This is considered as the first Airport in the country. In the beginning there were no much facilities in the Airport and the runway was limited. The Airport is situated four kilometers way from the city (Dubai International Airport, n. d.). The growth rate of the Dubai International Airport is high compared to other Airports in the Middle East. The Dubai International Airport holds highest position in the ratings by authorities like International Air Transport Association (IATA) (Home, n. d.). The Dubai International Airport is owned by the government of United Arab Emirates (Profile, n. d.). The Transportation facility ki nd of the infrastructure of a country has to be developed continuously. The development of Dubai International Airport is essential for the development of the country and for making one among the top countries of the world. If the International Airport at Dubai is developed at a higher phase it can attract many foreigners including tourists and investors. The investors would be investing in country only after a detailed study of the infrastructure of that particular country including the international transportation. This fact forced the government of the United Arab Emirates, to think about the development of existing international airport by way of expansion programs. The phase II expansion plan was an initiative to such a development. By this Phase II expansion what the government is aimed is overall development of the different facilities of the Airport. The main aim was this expansion program was to increase the traffic facility as number of airlines and passengers is goes on increasing. In order to accommodate these increased airlines, the existing traffic facilities need to be improved. The globalization and other development in the world has increased the number of passengers and coming to and going from the country. The new development plan includes the construction of buildings, new landing facilities an other modifications. As new buildings and facilities are going to be created in the airport, the infrastructure facility inside the airport will also have to be subjected for modification and improvement (Dubai Airport Terminal, n. d.). The cargo mega terminal creation is another major part of the Airport development. This terminal is cons tructed in such a way that it can deal millions of freight. Both the projects that is the phase II expansion and construction of cargo terminal creation has been started in the year 2002 and the expected completion time of the Phase II expansion is 2007 and that of cargo mega terminal is 2018 (Dubai International Airport, n. d.). The development plan is a systematically designed one. This is designed in such a way that it can create much customer value by way of providing the customers the required service at ease. The organizational chart for this development plan is designed keeping in mind the change in technology. The main person who is the sole authority of this expansion project

Reinstatement of the Draft. The selective service Essay
Reinstatement of the Draft. The selective service - Essay Example The Rangel proposal is supported by yet another ranking democratic Congressman, and a fellow member of the Congressional Black Caucus; Representative John Conyers (D. Mich.), contend that African Americans and Hispanics are disproportionately represented in todayââ¬â¢s military, he says the children of the rich should serve alongside the less privileged Americans in the war on terrorâ⬠(Conyers) Obviously, it would not be prudent to attack either one of the Congressmen as being racist, for obvious reasons. However, one can safely challenge, whether their altruistic motives are the appropriate panacea for leveling the battle field. We must take with a grain of salt, the suggestions of anyone who advocates the dismantling of the professional force ââ¬â this entity has been efficient in serving America for more than 30 years. When one questions the experts of military history and science, not to mention 2 those who have conducted scientific studies on the subject, wherein th e overwhelming conclusion is an all volunteer ââ¬â (professional) military is much more efficient, that there are specific cases of more bravery and they get the job done with far less anomalies and other types of malfeasance than one could ever expect when using draftees. One must be mindful of our recent past with the draft. The Selective Service sometime in 1967, shifted to a lottery in their selection process, ostensibly this shift would add parity and result in less discrimination against the poor and people of color. It is important to note, that the outcome in Vietnam, reflected that the rich and the privileged, did not report to induction centers, as their money and influence served them well in securing exemptions. Ostensibly, the lottery draft was designed to add parity to the process and make the military more representative of the general American Population. However, it was used to widen the gap. According to James Carafano, a 25 year veteran of the armed forces, and a senior fellow at the Heritage foundation, "conscription makes sense only in moments of extreme national peril such as the Civil War and World War II. During the second world war, for example, virtually all able-bodied men of draft age - about 12 million - were needed to defend the republic. In short the draft was fair because virtually everybody that could serve had to serve. But those moments are rare. Imposing a draft at any other time creates not shared sacrifice, but a lottery for the unlucky"(Carafano) James Judge, a career counselor in Washington, D. C., decided to enlighten

Forces that Shaped Women Essay Example for Free
Forces that Shaped Women Essay Indeed, it can be said that what has become of the women of the present day is shaped by forces other than the history. It is easy to discern that the history has been filled with stories of great men and had been mostly the chronicles of the undertakings of the males. Thus, it has focused only on them and their recounting. Also, it could be noticed that even the history, whether it be local or in relation to the international arena, is divided according to the male dominants of that time. They become the stone that reminded everyone of that point in the history. Although, it is not to be taken in general but it is that which prevails. Therefore, with the foregoing statement, it could really be justified that there are forces that shaped women to what they have been now. These forces prove to be more important than the history, which is leaning towards the men, and has not relied solely on the importance of the history but rather, on the other driving forces. What the woman has achieved right now is to be credited to the Womenââ¬â¢s Movement. It is the beginning of cooperative efforts that fought against the oppression and the inequality they feel when it comes to gender relations. It was not a bloody revolution as depicted in wars, but a revolution of nobility but still with hardships encountered. The womenââ¬â¢s movement started with an afternoon of tea on July 13, 1848. As Elizabeth Cady Stanton was invited with four friends for a cup of tea in New York, their conversations fell into the situation of women with regards to rights and freedom, which sparked the initiative to start a revolution that would end the gender oppression (Eisenberg and Ruthsdotter). This same group of women also organized the convention they called ââ¬Å"A Convention to discuss the social, civil, and religious conditions and rights of womanâ⬠(Eisenberg and Ruthsdotter). It was in this convention that the Declaration of Sentiments was drafted and approved by the women attendees, including the right to suffrage (Eisenberg and Ruthsdotter). From these situation, it could be said that legislation and advocacy shaped women. The laws that favored them and also those which oppressed them have contributed much to what they are right now in the society. It may be more or less good that resulted to either uplifting or further depression of the women in the society. Moreover, the women of today, given the right to an education, have the chance to gain knowledge and insights within the academe (Jackson and Jones, p. 4). The wave of feminism has gone over to the institutions to bring about the change needed and to heighten the awareness of the people regarding the state of women (Jackson and Jones, p. 4). Therefore, the academe served as an avenue for the exchange of ideas and the breeding ground for the empowerment of women and served as one of the contributory factors that shaped women to what it is today (Jackson and Jones, p. 4). It is, however, to be noted that the academe only gave the chance to the women who have the capacity and the ability to enter the institution and have formal education. This will narrow down the number of women who can have the chance to reap the fruits of the driving force of women empowerment in the academe. Still, this institution served the purpose of creating an impact to the women. Also, it can be said that the women were shaped by the literature written by the intellects and experts in the field of women studies (Jackson and Jones, p. 5). The ideas of these people have perpetuated the soul and are expected to have an impact on the way the woman are. The existing literature regarding the field in practice and in theory will add up to the knowledge and awareness of women about themselves. More specifically, these theories on feminism created are ââ¬Å"women generating knowledge about women and gender for womenâ⬠(italics supplied by author) (Jackson and Jones, p. 1). It will also make them more visible and will help in the mainstreaming of women in the different portions of the society. The more literature is written about the women, the greater are the chances, too, of making them more apparent in the society and will make the whole world know that there are actually changes that are happening with the women. Slowly, it will help perpetuate fields which were previously handled by men. In the history, especially with the philosophical thinkers, most of them were men and the ideas they convey are, of course, from the viewpoint of women. The slightest taint of women in their writings is visible, if there are even any. With the help of authors, both men and women, who write about the women, more and more is known and they become incorporated into the scene of the society. Lately, different fields, some are even unexpected, have been involving women and they even succeeded. These fields give women the chance to excel and realize their full potential. Also, the role of the media, through its different mediums, is of great importance to shaping women (Thornham, p. 231). It is the fastest way of communicating to people which made advocacy and exchange of ideas a lot easier and accessible to all. Also, it can highlight the success of women in the different fields and will give an update of how they are faring especially with the issues. However, it could also influence the mindset of the women when it comes to what is expected of them. The current trends in fashion, the role expected by them of the society, the behavior they have to manifest, the attitude, and others of the same kind are being given by media the emphasis it deserves to change the line of though of women. Still, the importance of the history of women can not be totally set aside. It gives out the chronicles of important facts and will serve as a reminder to the women of today. The historical accounts regarding women are, because of their great distinction from men, are being given special shelves in certain libraries. Some also have built their own website to serve as electronic references for greater accessibility. Others may have used other forms such as paintings and other forms of art. All of these are intended to keep the fire burning and to let the people know that there existed such a thing. The books that contained literature about womenââ¬â¢s history proves that the women had experienced a colorful and distinct past, which are not included in most ordinary history books. Different fields have their own different history such as that in sports. They highlight how the women evolved to what it currently is. It deserves special attention since books can be found in any library and can easily be located anywhere. Also, not far from the books are those articles about women in the internet. These are made available for those who do not have access to libraries or would simply want to have a faster means of seeing the past of the women. However, it is to be noted that some electronic articles go unchecked before published so it is better to be careful about historical accounts they present. Art can also be used as a very convenient and convincing way of representing women. It can give a figurative representation of women that will most clearly capture the situation of the women in the past and can give a better picture and understanding to those who chose to see it today. Another form where womenââ¬â¢s past is represented might be through the movies and documentaries that are being produced through films, nowadays. There is the fact that some people do not have the patience to go through long articles or to identify and capture the meaning of an art. The moving picture can easily and entertainingly give the audience the chance to have a background on what transpired in the past. The history of women should not be gone into oblivion. The entitlements and the benefits enjoyed by the present generation of women are things which should be thanked for and should not be treated as something that came as natural as being born. It is a claim that was made for a long span of time and still is in continuance. The Construction Of The Great Wall
The Construction Of The Great Wall The construction of the great wall arose throughout the Warring States Period (403 to 221 BC). The Great Wall is a fortification alongside the northern and northwestern boundary of China, running from Shanhaiguan on the Gulf of Bohai on the east to the vicinity of Gaodai, Gansu Province, on the west, with an inner wall consecutively southward from the vicinity of Beijing almost to Handan. Shi Huangdi, first emperor of the Chin dynasty founded the biggest portion of the wall as a defense against raids by nomadic peoples. Organized work on the wall was begun about 221 BC, after Shi Huangdi had united China under his rule, and it was completed about 204 BC. Small segments of the wall were probably already in existence, but Shi Huangdi is thought to have had some nearly 1,200 miles of the wall erected during his reign. 300,000 men several of them political prisoners whose bodies are thought to be buried in the wall (not essentially true) were put to work joining the segments into one h uge rampart of stone and earth. In later times, chiefly during the period of the Ming dynasty (AD 1368-1644), the Great Wall was fixed and extended by reinforcing it with cement and stone. The fortification finally reached a length of about 1,500 miles, ensuing the course of rivers instead of bridging them and conforming to the contours of the mountains and valleys in its path. The wall is built of earth and stone, faced with brick in the eastern parts. It is from 15 to 30 feet thick at the base (about 20 feet on the average) and tapers to some 12 feet at the top. The height averages 25 feet exclusive of the crenellated parapets. Watchtowers about 40 feet in height are placed at intervals of approximately 200 yards. Several hundred kilometers of the Great Wall remain intact in the eastern reaches. The amount of brick and stone working to construct the Great Wall might limit the earth with a barrier eight feet high. From the 6th to the 14th centuries, the wall proved to be an effective barrier against strong-minded invaders, who revealed that bribing the lookouts was their most effective weapon. The Chinese Emperors aided in this cause by failing to pay there army troops, usually a bad mistake. If you dont pay your army, someone else will. Scholars guess that the Great Wall with all its divisions once stretched for 6,200 miles, from the Yalu River in the northern east to Xinjiang in the northwest. Today it measures 6,000 miles. The Great Wall has suffered serious damage from wind and water erosion, as well as man-made destruction. In the past it has been a treasure store of stone for many a poor farmer. Between 1870 and 1974, the 8th Route Army stationed at Gubeikou destroyed 9,840 feet of the wall to use the stone to erect some barracks. Later in 1979, the State ordered the same army group to tea r down their barracks and rebuild the wall. In 226 the armies of the Chu Dynasty and the Qin dynasty met in a great final battle. The victor would get the prize of the richest and most technologically advanced nation of the world. The Qin Emperor needed to defend the country from the marauding bands of nomadic horsemen of the north. These bands of horsemen who raided the rich farmland came from the barren land of the north and were forced to become marauding nomads. It was a clash of farmers against warriors. The group would be difficult to defeat. The strength, stability and prosperity of the new empire were threatened by these marauding hordes. To preserve Chinas borders the Qin set about building a huge defensive barrier in 221 BC. Wall building became the chief defensive strategy to repel the enemy from the north. This was in the age before gunpowder and cannons. The first Great Wall was a massive undertaking. It was the equivalent of building 30 of the great pyramids of Egypt. To build this great wall of 3,000 miles the Qin Emperor chose his most able general Ling Qia. He was given an army of over 300,000 men. They had to build roads, and the infrastructure as well as the wall. Much of the wall was built of beaten clay. Rock was not always available, so tamped earth became the first choice. Dirt was designated from at least four inches below the surface so seeds and grasses could not germinate and thus undermine the strength of the wall. Consuming first a form made of wood, earth was piled and was pounded into a layer of four inches thick. Following layers of this would produce a wall twenty feet high that would still be standing some 2,000 years later. The wall stretched from the borders of North Korea across the northern border to the far reaches in western China. In ten years they built a wall across the entire northern border of China in lands that included marshes, quicksand, deserts, and altitudes of 8,000 feet. They built twenty-five miles a month that is almost a mile a day. One section is across 60 miles of a mountain range. This section was built entirely of native stone with the flat face placed on the outside to face the enemy. This dry stonewall was built 20 feet high with 26-foot high beacon towers. The Qin army invented new weapons to exploit thei r advantage of their new wall. The most deadly of these was the crossbow that could hurl an arrow 250 yards with amazing accuracy. Other weapons included iron casting techniques to produce double edged swords which would not be known in the west for some 1,300 years later. The soft bronze swords of the enemy were no match for the double-edged iron swords of the Qin army. All of this was achieved at great economic and human costs. The emperor thought the wall would bring peace to the nation but the nation was weakened by the heavy cost of the construction. Ditches along the wall were filled with the corpses of workers who died building the wall. Deaths of wall workers are estimated to exceed one million. Some have claimed that the dead workers were entombed in the wall itself. Later investigations proved this untrue. Also decaying bodies would have weakened the structure and would not have been allowed. No society could sustain such a terrible burden. Taxation became heavier and heav ier. Some 3,500,000 people were involved in the building of the Great Wall. That was 70% of the total population of China at that time. For each worker working on the wall, six were required to feed and support them. Construction of the Qin wall became the most loathed imperial plan in Chinese history. In 209 BC, Only a year after the death of the Qin Emperor, millions of laborers rose up and ended the tyranny and bloodshed of wall building. The Qin Dynasty had fallen, brought down by the building of the great wall. Within ten years much of the wall was a neglected ruin. Once again the northern border was at the mercy of the northern invaders. After three years of civil war in 206 BC the first Han Dynasty was formed under the Gao Di Emperor, Liu Bang. At first he attempted to appease the northern invaders with gifts and increased trade but peace was sporadic. A massive force of the Han army attacked the invaders and forced them back across the northern borders. To consolidate their victories they began to mark out their new extended borders. In many areas they simply restored the old Qin wall. In order to build walls in the desert of the west, new methods of construction had to be devised. Here the soil consists of a gravel of sand and small stones. They used alternating layers of red willows and the gravel and lots of tamping. This produced a wall that has survived for some 2,000 years. Using these techniques and hundreds of thousands of people, the Han were able to build the wall far into the Gobi desert. And where clay was used as a skin or coating it made the wall difficult to scale and protected it against the erosion of the weather. The Han leadership knew to have a strong frontier they not only needed to build a strong wall but they also needed crack troops to defend it. They developed a force of light cavalry that could foray into the enemy territory to check on the enemy movements in his own grounds. They had many victories against the Xiongnu. They then employed renegade Xiongnu horse masters to set up horse breeding stables and to train their troops in horsemanship. By the time of the sixth Han Emperor Wu Di some 66 years later, they had crushed the Xiongnu and the wall was extended some 300 miles into the Gobi Desert. The wall now extended across the principle trading routes and if you wished to trade with the Chinese you needed to enter through the gates in the wall. Around these gates towns were established and became the trade centers of the area. At most gates foreigners were not allowed to go past the gates so these became the portals of trade into China. One flawless example is the stunningly preserved Jade Gate. Built in 101 BC, it is 28 feet high and 66 feet square. Close by they built a fort for the Han soldiers defending the wall. This piece of the wall is 453 feet long, 115 feet wide and 23 feet high. The wall became more than a trade route and a barrier to keep out the enemy, it turned out to be vital for communications. Along its ramparts messages can be sent at incredible speeds from one end of the empire to the other. All along the northern border beacon towers were built every 15 to 30 miles. They formed a communication network, which ran from outposts deep into enemy territory to the ancient capital in the east. From these towers the Han troops used smoke by day and torches by night to send messages along the length of the wall. They burnt wood, and straw mixed with wolf dung, which produced rich black columns of smoke. Statutes firmly governed the code of these signals. One column of smoke indicated a n impending attack by a force of less than 500. Two columns showed an attack by a force less than 3,000 and four columns indicated an attack by a force of up to 10,000.China would wait another 1,300 years before embarking on its greatest period of wall building. The Ming Dynasty built much of what remains today. They were driven by desperation to build the ultimate defense and lock the northern frontier once and for all. The Ming renovated the old Qin and Han walls and extended them. The Ming wall stretched some 4,500 miles from the Korean border at Dandong to the city of Jayuguan in the western desert. Today that fort is one of the most impressive, ornate, and sophisticated military constructions in the history of China. The Ming Dynasty came into power in 1368 inheriting a nation crushed by 100 years of rule by the Mongols. The mighty Genghis Khan had united these tribes in 1206 and had pushed their way through China. Ultimately they fell from within. A peasant revolt spelled the defeat of the Mongol empire. The leader of this revolt was Zhu Yangzhong who was installed as the first Ming Emperor. He immediately took up the challenge to begin building the great defense again. The enthusiasm in which the Ming emperors embraced this ambition was staggering. They built more wall than any other dynasty. The Ming wall was typically built with a stone facing over tamped inner clay. This wall was almost indestructible. The Ming bricks were a marvel of engineering holding up to a pressure of over 1000 pounds per square inch. The mortar was of super strength. The mortar was stronger than the bricks themselves. The puzzle of this super strength has now been solved. The mystery ingredient was rice flour. With innovations like these, the Ming was able to build spectacular monuments. A feature of the wall was water drainage systems that channeled the water to the Chinese side and withheld the water to the enemy side and thus inhibited plant growth and so denied cover to the attackers. Warning towers were built in enemy territory. These spurs were built out from the main wall and permitted the Chinese to attack the marauders from two sides. The armies were controlled from watchtowers that were built every 200 yards along the Ming walls. Locks and bolts secured the doors and windows from within creating a formidable fortress. From these towers the defenders could unleash arrows and spears from heavily protected slits. Later cannon were used. Having discovered gunpowder, the Ming was also the first to use hand grenades and mines. Stones were also pushed through special openings to create man made avalanches to crush the enemy. If the attackers succeeded in scaling the wall, the defenders could retreat to the guard towers. These guard towers were only accessible by retractable ladders.
